disappointingly, modern Egyptologists have mischaracterized Egyptian society, even Breasted is guilty of this, perhaps out of deference to modern tastes and religious pressure:

the issue here is that Breasted seems unaware of the great respect for individual in Egyptian society that persisted throughout the historical record; Akhenaten was not the first individual and certainly not the first religious reformer...
