He drew on the Dark Side to survive, but the depths he had to go to to achieve this, the despair, hatred, fear, and anger were so great that it cost him his sanity, and he devolved into an insane rabid animal, with only a shred of his clarity and personality being held together by the desire for vengeance. He got sucked into a ventilation shaft and dropped in garbage, and then shipped off-world onto a remote garbage planet. He was feeding off of living beasts and trespassers for a decade, until he was discovered by a member of his clan from his home planet during the Clone Wars, who dragged him out of the abyss.
