Without getting into the specifics the premise I have plays into this. The general idea I had is that your characters are slowly getting corrupted and turned more mutated and using magic speeds this process up, but it can eventually get to a point that your characters will lose themselves and become Moonscorched-esque bosses. But the only way to get rid of injuries like limb loss or blindness is via magic, but also there'd be more minor injuries like broken bones that can take several in-game days to heal 'naturally' and the only way to get around that is via magic too.
There will be ways to lower your corruption but it'd be based on XP so you actually get stronger and get more skills the more corrupted you are so it'd be a long term consequences and danger vs immediate consequences and danger.
I was thinking of more things related to combat itself though.
