I only played the genesis version of 1 and had a similar problem, though I got to Mamono but couldn't do the escape sequence because I didn't have all the spells the game wanted me to have. Thankfully the game gear versions of 2 and 3 at least are a bit better but the games can still be a little cryptic here and there. Not sure about the PC-98 versions mainly because i hate the realistic artstyle it has
