Actually, I'd like to expand on this a bit since I'm also a Potterhead. Cartman is Harry, the leader. Aside from that natural charisma ("There's no need to call me sir, professor") and tendency to take charge, they're completely different. But Cartman IS South Park, you know?

Kenny is Ron. The protagonists best friend, always in his shadow. Poor as shit and vulgar as hell, quicker to fight than to speak, but he understands the world they live in better than anyone and is loyal to a fault.

Butters is Hermione. Has the intelligence and work ethic to ensure that the protagonists plan pulls through. A bit of a pushover due to their sensitive and softhearted nature, but can also be downright devious to the people they dislike.

(I'm talking about the book versions btw, the movies made Harry a saint, Ron a dumbass, and Hermione a Mary Sue)

What's funny to me is that despite these parallels, Ron/Hermione are constantly bickering like an old married couple while Kenny/Butters have more of a Harry/Ginny dynamic (the thought of Cartman/Karen just popped into my head and now I feel ill). Butters irrationally adores Kenny while Kenny just sees him as a classmate, Kenny becomes protective of Butters (rather like Karen) but still just sees him as a friend of his friend. But as they spend more time together and begin empathizing with each other due to their shared experiences, Butters also becomes more confident and outspoken, displaying his true self to Kenny who realizes that he likes what he sees.

Fuck I gotta cut this short and go, but again reminder that I'm talking about the book versions, movie Ginny was a cardboard cutout that Harry started liking just because.
