Aside from the choice of leaders and civs (Harriet Tubman, really?), the concept that civs evolve into other civs is fundamentally multi cultural.
There is no permanence. Every civilization is a nebulous thing that lasts for an era then turns into something else. Civs themselves are customizable to the point that they cease to resemble their historical counterpart and just become an amalgam of various stat bonuses and this is true of both the player's civ and the AI civs. In the past if you were playing against Ghengis Khan and the Mongols you knew who you were dealing with. Now you're up against Harriet Tubman who lead the Roman Empire before it turned into Ming China before it turned into Mexico. There are no nations, there are no peoples.
