The theurgy cyoa is cool and all but it’s not very accurate; in fact it’s downright erroneous to assume that materials and substances had zero influence or nothing to do in theurgical matters, when they absolutely did, not just in ceremonial affairs but also as something to receive. Solomon, arguably the greatest theurge in myth, alongside Moses, was given divine tools, like demon bindings rings and matter eating goo, by God to shape the world and to bind spirits.
Specifically, theurgy utilized specific materials and tools, such as physical tokens (synthemata), offerings, consecrated objects, ceremonial tools, incantations (objects of the mind), and sacred plants or metals, in their ceremonies to facilitate communion with the divine. Sometimes even sacrifices.
These elements were not mere decorations but integral to the ritual process, creating a conducive environment and acting as points of connection to the intelligible and tertiary causes of the universe.
Alchemy was actually seen as the ‘key to theurgy’ in the hermetic tradition; one had to alchemically refine the soul, or spirit, to interact and communicate with the divine, and what is alchemy also associated with if not the physical, material, and changing world?
Theurgy as an oversimplification is really just successful priesthood. God-wizardry.
