I doubt paid is referring to the EGG as a bribe. It’s Kris’ reward on remembering the forgotten man despite the struggles of his trauma in chapter 3. So it would be in chapter 4.

Getting paid could also refer to Kris’ mistakes on Dess and the Forgotten Man, of getting them trapped in the dark.
Maybe like Ralsei and Asriel, the Forgotten Man strangely resembles Dess. Since Ralsei (chapter 2 in the love tunnel) and the Forgotten Man given out similar speeches of being unsure of their existences, which isn’t really a Darkner thing. Darkners even know what their objects are in the light world and love being treated with a singular purpose. Whatever Ralsei is, he isn’t a part of Dess’ and Kris’ original creations and nor is the Forgotten Man. Ramb was abandoned and used outside of his purpose, but he never was “what am I” or forgetful on who he is. And Ramb never shows up on any dark world as he likes, as Ralsei and the Forgotten Man do.

Maybe the real reason why Kris is so freaked out is because some part of him knows they are… Asriel’s and Dess’ children. And they are subconsciously lured in by their mother’s imagination. To try to remember what she is.
