Anyone who thinks the Kremlings are generic because they are koopa-adjecent due to being reptiles is gay and retarded. They are redesigns of battletoads-esque Rare characters that would have featured in a space game about the kremling armada. If anything they are more similar to TMNT than koopas, even if both are turtles, based off what they were designed after. You can even see a bit of Battletoads influence in the original kremlings renders from DKC1, with their armor and military getups, mohwaks, etc.
