It was cool to see him as the villain in 1-3 because it was a running story essentially. I didn't like his mad scientist look in 3 though, it didn't fit him or look cool.
It was good that Nintendo decided to take a break from him for Retro's games because even though it was still DKC, it Returns and Freeze are just different plots altogether.

He's just an iconic villain in that 1) DKC was actually a good game and he was the final boss with a cool design and neat gimmick and 2) I forgot what my second point was, but he's cool. Kremlings as a whole were cool and the tribal conflict between Kongs and Kremlings was just another aspect of the games that felt right. Other than that, some people are just fags about reptile dick or something Idk they're gay for him.

He was established as the villain of a major franchise and had 4 consecutive appearances in the span of 6 years.

Then the series went on an 11-year hiatus. When it returned, they only made two games, and he wasn't in either of them. Then, a second 11-year hiatus.

He's quite unremarkable by Nintendo main villain standards, but we haven't seen the guy in 25 years. Why wouldn't we be happy to see him again?

I assume since Jungle Climber was his last story appearance that he fell off the banana ship when it was dragging him back into orbit and he got submerged pretty deep in the earth then dug further once he heard about the banandium root plus dragged the rest of the Kremling Krew on his hunt when they found his crash site.

I think it has more to do with the fact King K Rool has had more time and exposure to be popular. That and the fact that the new DK country games trimmed off so much that fans enjoyed about the series that they would naturally be bitter about the 'replacements'. Although he definitely wore it well this time and it was appropriate for his grand return, I hope Nintendo doesn't keep trying to escalate K. Rool as this planetary threat. I don't dislike this conceptually. Which is why I never complained about it at the time.
But after several attempts over and over. I think it's pretty safe to say that none of the new villains/enemies have been anywhere close to as good as the kremlings/krool. So that's kind of sad.

If you're going to replace something really good, at least have a solid idea to replace it with. It's not really something you should just wing.

I don't think Miyamoto or anyone at Nintendo ever banned the K. Rool or the Kremlings. When you look the timeline, you'll see that K. Rool featured Barrel Blast, Jungle Climber, and Mario Sluggers, all games that came out only 2-3 years before DKCR and likely coincided with its development, seems awfully weird for Miyamoto to suddenly develop a burning hatred for the Kremlings specifically, not any other Rare creations like Diddy Kong. What I think is more likely is that Nintendo was simply apathetic towards them, which why they were relegated to spinoffs. It was probably Retro who didn't want to use K. Rool, and Nintendo, not particularly caring one way or another, didn't bat an eye

I did once think of a plot for the two to team up for a game.
You first play as King K Rool in a tutorial-like level in the Northern Kremisphere, plowing through the Snowmads before confronting Frederik. The two fight but after the tutorial boss ends it concludes with them reaching some kind of alliance when they both realize they have a shared enemy in DK.

There's also Jungle Beat to consider. I think that Nintendo prefers working with their own characters at least their older devs did. The younger devs, (relatively speaking), seem a bit more open to the collaborations with outside influences. Also when you consider that Bananza has K Rool and the theme park has Tiki Tong, they could have easily had K Rool in the theme park instead as they had to be planning for K Rool a lot longer with these dev times. Nintendo is simply celebrating a lot more of DK now than before.

The name is a clear flaw. Back when I was a kid and I played the first DKC game, King K Rool honestly only had three noteworthy things that made him memorable. Kick ass boss music, the end credits fake-out and the fun name pun. That was a lot for the time and Rare only built on from that point forward.

What Frederick and the snowmads need to make them more notable are unique quirks we learn about them as the game progresses, something that other Mario/ DK enemies don't have yet.

What could be cool is if we see Fredericks father, maybe their father son dynamic, (both being adults instead of father child dynamic that Bowser and Jr have), could make him more memorable.

I think it does, the Kremlings are consistently shown to be pretty industrial. Unlike the Koopas who use dark magic, the Kremlings only seem to use magic in terms of controlling it like a Nazi Scientist would. Or ghosts which I think is just a byproduct of their hellhole being a hellhole and not something they actively invoked.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Snowmads were so painfully close to being great. The Sea Lion and the Polar Bear were fantastic, the premise was fantastic, the Snowmads were really held back by 3 things, in order of least to great

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Crocodile Isle in all its gloomy grimy glory in a modern day game, but that'd be a little tricky considering it's at the bottom of the ocean.
I'd like to see it dredged up in a way where everything's all waterlogged now, but even then K. Rool's castle and everything above the forest layer was obliterated by the Kore explosion.
I also don't actually trust Retro to get the aesthetic right. Bananza also doesn't really look like classic DK most of the time but they got the look basically perfect when they were trying to imitate the classic designs and environments. Retro can make some pretty environments but they're all very clean and their character designs (at least for DK games) are generally weak and mid-2000's Dreamworks-y.

The one anon that said an Orca would make for a great Snowmad leader was on to something. Though I'm also biased since I made a DK oc who's an orca who's race is anthro sea mammals like whales, dolphins and that sort called Dolfends and Dolfiends. Also I've got to say with the Snowmads that Skowl, Pompy and Bashmaster were great as a tradeoff to Fredrick's underwhelming nature. Honestly if the ice dragon from the horn he uses was the true final boss that might've balanced out more.

That was one of the two possible answers Rare had for why K.Rool stole the horde, if K.Rool just wanted the Kongs dead, he wouldn't have bothered kidnapping DK for a banana ransom, it's clear by now that the series has settled on K.Rool wanting to steal the banana horde because he just likes eating rotten bananas.
K.Rool didn't even touch the banana trees, Dedede on the other hand also stole Dream Land's main source of food, so not only did he take a ton of food, he made sure no one else could get anymore food, Dedede somehow managed to create a food shortage on a planet that had already solved world hunger and when he lost to Kirby for the first time he got so angry that he immediately did the whole thing again.
Dedede is a true hero now, but he used to be an asshole, K.Rool used to only be an asshole, but now he want to kill and eat everyone.

Honestly, I don't think K. Rool should like bananas. It's more interesting if he doesn't care about them or hates them.

I didn't see that as a realistic offer, and in-game he says they'll never see DK again. I saw it as him just going out of his way to torture the kongs. You see this with him making them think they rescued DK in Stronghold Showdown, and then in his fight where he starts off abusing DK pretty brutally.

K.Rool left two notes in DKC2, the first was the ransom, the second was found at Gangplank Galleon, after the Kongs had chosen to not give up the horde, no shit they're never going to see DK again if they aren't going to pay up.
Something I also forgot to mention is that while bananas are the Kong's favorite food, there's plenty of other fruit to eat on DK Isle, stealing the horde wouldn't starve them regardless.

Because crocodiles are fucking aweseome, saturday morning cartoony villain scthick with different costumes is aweseome, and his being actually unironically an evil bastard unlike Bowser is also fucking cool. He is just a really awesome character, he is basically like a giant evil daffy duck. Which sits in strong contrast to most of Nintendo's cast, being a heavily western design both in inspiration and aesthetic.

Aside from my fanboy sperging, he gained a gigantic boost in notoriety after smash ultimate, and prior to that, a long kampaign of being considered an underdog on a meta level because Retro refused to use him and would have rather not made a new DK game for an entire 10 years than even bother acknowledging him in any capacity.

After you beat Void, you can meet with Grumpy at the boss arena where he'll say while Void's greedy, Grumpy personally respects that drive. One thing I didn't care for was their hypnosis powers. You fight random animals rather than the boss Tikis themselves. One fix for this was instead of hypno powers they could instead use influence and be worshiped as deities by the animals, taking advantage of darker desires for power, fame and fortune with false promises. They would call upon their followers to gather their treasures, (in this case bananas), and sacrifice them to the volcano. You could then have either a two stage boss fight with both the animal boss and the Tiki boss or a secret boss fight for each area, regular animal boss fight but if you collect all the Kong letters or something in each stage you can fight the Tiki Boss.

The only time Nightmare was a super prominent bad guy was the Hoshi no Kaabi/Right Back at Ya anime which also makes him a much bigger threat what with the intergalactic demon beast creating corporation, ability to move essentially Gorath towards Popstar and just being a much more prominent villain to the point I think that's why Nightmare in Dreamland was made since it uses his anime design and just good timing to remake the game suppose. How was Cranky localized in Japanese? I just played Bananza in Japanese, and while he came off as a sort of grumpy old man, his dialogue doesn't feel the same as it did in English. Part of that is because English to Japanese translation is far less "flavorful". If you ever compare the Japanese dub or subs of a movie to its native English version, you can see so much is lost. A sentence like "A buncha simperin' simians had their primate peeling prizes poached by a crew of cantankerous crocs cruisin' the seven seas!" is not going be anywhere near the same in Japanese. It's going to be translated to the most basic meaning of the line, which is "The Kongs' bananas were stolen by crocodile pirates!"

Chances are that every single instance of Cranky from the Rare games was translated to Japanese in this way, with his speech style being made to match a stereotypical old man. Japanese people at Nintendo were not playing Rare's games in English, they likely weren't getting manuals like that pic.

The easiest way to do that is to play to what the series is good at and improving one of Star Fox's other gameplay styles. Like making On-Foot missions more enjoyable, characters having more to say to each other (one of the best parts of the game is the cast talking to each other), and making each of the smaller events in the story cool again. I think King K Rool variety in professions and gimmicks is what made him an interesting villain for many. It was also what made people want him for smash due to all the moveset potential he gathered across his apparitions.
I also kind of fear that in possible future apparitions they made only reference his previous personas and smash moveset over make him embrace new crazy ideas. His return has epic but also feel they leaned too much on nostalgia, specially with the music (ngl it was awesome music and they kinda also refernce krusha k rool theme as well).
I hope they made him a wizard or an space conqueror (that also fits his pirate persona) in a new adventure. He is the kind of character you can jump the shark with.

That's what I figured. The skeletons of non crockoid/buzzoid enemies though aren't the same as the kremling enemies though. Only the zingers and kremlings translate into true analogues for their counterparts. There is an awful lot of dead crocodile skeletons in the areas and you literally see them be used to make crockoids tho.

I just can't, like he was the coolest character to me growing up and it's just like... I respect the bastard too much to do it. I don't really know how quite to put it. But that okusan character is kinda hot idk. Maybe if I can convince myself she's just a cosplayer who is obsessed with the guy. But she couldn't top the guy unless he wanted her to, I think he would be too insulted by the idea of someone thinking they can be in control instead of him for that long.

If you're counting the big console platformer games, then yes. By technical terms, his last appearance in the series was DK Jungle Climber back in 2007, and his last appearance in anything besides Smash was Mario Super Sluggers.

He's very much a generic villain, actually. I mean, he's probably cooler in Bananza than he ever was in the old games. They make him come across as a real apocalyptic level threat, as opposed to a guy who wants to steal your bananas.

Anyway, the lesson is that Nintendo needs to stop putting ganon and Bowser in everything, so we actually give a shit when they come back.

I'm fine with them tying his design changes to boss fights like his boxer gimmick and King of Rot. It's a fair compromise. I don't see the point in trying to theme the entire Kremling Krew to new gimmicks when Rare really only did it once, and pirates will never be topped. Plus, they weren't just playing pirate, they actually are pirates by default. It honestly feels more like the costume gimmick was a B-team conceit that started with DKC3 in a half-assed manner and carried over into 64 from there.

The pirate theme is cool and arguably definitive, but there's so much potential to be explored and it'd be a hell of lot more interesting to see them try instead of generic kremlings again (I get why they were used in 64 and Bananza but I want a new theme for the next game). It's something that seperates the Kremlings from the Koopas.

Yoshi and dreams haven't been a thing really, however Yoshi does dabble with the surreal and children's storybook aesthetic a lot. Actually one thing the Yoshi series has done a lot is utilize time travel, I wouldn't mind a time hopping adventure with dinosaurs being the ones to travel through time in the future. Anything but another Giant Bowser final.
