Not really. Look at the Kremlings in DKC2 and look at the Koopa Troop. Even in DKC1, there was a grit to the Kremlings that the Koopas don't have and really never had. The graphics really played a part in it.

This is what they mean by dark, these guys aren't pristine or clean, they're scarred and damaged, amputations and stitches galore. You'll never see a DK game with something akin to this ever again.
