This is not unique to comics.
But more specific to comics, its that they don't get it's supposed to be a black box. A character brilliant enough in this specific field for a specific invention, but otherwise no different than anyone else. It's a plot convenience as much as any power-granting accident, not a pass to always know better than everyone else.
