Gege also said she might have been the only one who understood him and then died, and that's why he turned so grumpy. He definitely knew more than he let on, especially about Kaoru and probably sorcery in general, but he never really gave me the impression of being an asshole, more like a man who was left all alone because of life. Yuji mentions how he and Wasuke went to one of his friends' funeral, and prior to that Wasuke had lost his wife and son. That's what he meant when he told Yuji "Protect people with your strength so you don't end up like me", and I fear that's what Gege is trying to do with Yuji in Modulo.
