These sky islands were false advertisement. The first gameplay trailer for the game showed expansive islands with little gazebos, fields, temples and forests. In the final game, you could visit the same locations and the sky would either be empty, or it would have the wimpy tiny copy-paste islands in their place.

Of course, they likely hadn't finished the islands when that trailer was produced, but still, how lame.
