it became even more commonplace in the russian military since they started conscripting career criminals and gangsters directly from prisons, where it's a group dominance and punishment feature. It's much easier for convicts to quickly establish control and unofficial hierarchy in military units full of recent civilians who've never been subjected to closed, rigid environments. russian command corrupted their military even further and deeper by mixing convicts into regular military units ... this will backfire big time (and already does to some extent) when the active war stops at some point at they'll have to discharge "the heroes" back into the russian society.
