>the MODERN EQUIVALENT game of Chrono Trigger would absolutely not flop if it released today.
I don't know, I'd push back on this statement. Even if we assume games inspired by it like I am Setsuna, Lost Sphear, or Sea of Stars never released so we never experienced that kind of gameplay style to begin with then Chrono Trigger if released to modern standards would likely do okay but not as well as it did on the SNES in relative terms.

Realistically it would be done in the style of something like Octopath Traveler, Harvestella, Triangle Strategy, etc. because Squeenix withholds the big budgets for games like FF or DQ, not a smaller game like that. I cannot reasonably believe Squeenix would go for a full 3D remake-esque looking version of it or even something akin to Xenoblade. Marketing would also be very low because of it. Combat would likely be compared to things like Tales of games or Trails games, maybe bring in the Mana games too, and then compared to standard ARPGs like FFXV, FFXVI, and then maybe games with ATB like FFVII or FFIV and FFV. I'd imagine it would still be well received because it would be an interesting concept if not done before, but it would also feel more restrictive because of how limiting the move pool is compared to other games in the genre.

The best it would excel at would be the time travel aspect and the map variety but would lose points because of how small the maps would be perceived and how quickly you go through each time period that you don't get time to appreciate them. I'd imagine they'd also praise the Lavos fight since it would be a fairly unique concept only compared to something like BotW's Ganon.

Cave Story would be you releasing the 3DS version. I don't know a better way to put it. It would be you releasing the 3DS version with no one ever having played the original. People would find it impressive for a one-man project but I don't know if it would ever pick up traction due to the different culture we have.
