The first time I ever heard "AR-15" was probably on the Discovery / History channel in the mid 00's but it would have sounded like techno babble. My earliest memory of the term is from January of 2012, the day I first tried one at the shooting range. It belonged to an associate of my father's so I recall nothing about its make or model. Some time afterward, I read the Wikipedia article summary for "AR-15" but didn't understand most of it so my takeaway was that AR-15's like the one I used are more customisable than the rifles issued in the military, kek. Little did I know they would become much more topical in the coming months of that year!
