The Hexen cinematic intro states the Chaos Sphere is the "source of Korax's power," meaning it's the source of the all the Riders' power or Korax stumbled upon it sometime after the three Riders conquered Parthoris and Korax and Eidolon went elsewhere. Eidolon then reclaimed it sometime after Hexen. In Hexen 2 it's shown that Eidolon directly taps into its power and grows larger, so it's possible it was or could be used to transform them.
