Ascending was just killing yourself and the issue wasn't that they couldn't solve it, it was that the iterators themselves couldn't do it due to built in rules, so the big question is how an iterator can go around the rule to then kill themself. Only 1 ever technically does this in the original game but never shared the how and so 5P tried to do the same thing by creating a creature that could go around the rule and kill him. However, Moon then interrupted that plan since he was using too much of their shared water so now he has rot that will kill him but far too slowly and instead of actually being controllable it's just fucking spreading and ruining his systems entirely.

They already figured out the whole ascension thing, they just can't do it themselves
