I still don't get how these tariffs work.

>wants more countries to buy more from the US
>so puts in place tariffs on things people are sending TO the US, not buying FROM the US
>which makes it cost more to send to the US
>which makes the trade deficit increase
Because if the US buys $3 billion from X country but only sells $2 billion to X country (so a $1 billion deficit), then if X country gets hit with a 50% tariff, it means the US now buys $4.5 billion from X country but is still only selling $2 billion to X country, creating a new deficit of $2.5 billion, right?
