There are further five matters of karmic retribution by which it is called Avici (Uninterrupted). What are the five?
The first: Day and night, one undergoes punishment, thereby arriving at a number of kalpas, with no period of time for which it is interrupted. Therefore is it called Uninterrupted.
The second: By one person is it filled, and also by many people is it made full; therefore is it called Uninterrupted.
The third: The implements of torture, the spears and clubs, the hawks, snakes, wolves and jackals, the grindstones and lathes, the saws and cauldrons, the iron nets and ropes, the iron donkeys and horses, the rawhide that binds the necks and hot steel that envelops the body; starving, one swallows metal balls, and dying of thirst one drinks molten iron, through the years extending into kalpas, until the number should reach into nayutas, with the pain and suffering coming one after the other, without a moment of ceasing; for this reason is it called Uninterrupted.
The fourth: regardless of if one is a man or woman, or barbarian, or old or young, or noble or low-born, whether a naga or spirit, whether deva or ghost, punishment is carried out in accordance to karma, with all undergoing this; therefore is it called Uninterrupted.
The fifth: Should one fall into this hell, from the time one enters until hundreds of thousands of kalpas have passed, each day and night he dies and is reborn a myriad times, and seeking even a moment's pause he finds it not, excepting that his karma should run out, that he might then be reborn; it is by this continuity that it is called Uninterrupted.
