Again, Ultima was doing so bad it was one inch close to death before Garriot came up with Ultima Underworld, Ultima VI in particular was a huge flop because outside of being a dogshit game most people didn't actually care about Ultima, they were playing shit like Wizardry, M&M and guess what? Dragon Quest, or maybe I should call it Dragon Warrior because that was its name back then.
To put things into perspective, the NES version of Dragon Quest 3 alone sold roughly DOUBLE the lifetime sales of the entire Ultima series, that's how dire the state of Ultima was, it was one of the many CRPG series that got an awful lot of lipservice but not many people actually bought and played the damn thing.
