By "popular" do you specifically mean the most popular ones for people to make their own OCs out of? If so, I bet part of the reason harpies seem fairly popular for OCs is that there's barely any notable harpy representation in most popular media, making OCs the only thing harpy fans have to draw. What named harpies even exist in anime other than Papi? The number goes up a bit if you include games since you can add Reina and Goose from Black Souls along with a few obscure VNs with a harpy as a main character, but you're really scraping the barrel at that point.
In other words, it kind of sounds like harpies and mermaids are only the most popular once you narrow down the list of things you're counting. It certainly doesn't FEEL like harpies are popular at the very least.

Yeah, this kinda thing is why I've never really cared for MGE. I've always thought it leaned way too far into indulgent wish fulfillment, even if I do still like other indulgent wish fulfillment things like MGD or Monster Musume. I rarely checked mgg until very recently so I'm not sure if that's a common opinion or not.

I still think it's pretty funny that the main guy's super special power was basically knowing how to shoot a gun.

Most good stories have some kind of theme or message, even if it's as simple as "friendship is good". Having a solid central theme tends to make a story better since the writer can make everything in the story fit together. Even slice of life stories can have themes like "having a loli fox wife to take care of me after work is pretty awesome".
