Even James Buchanan(the president before Lincoln) said that the Federal Government has no authority, but warned that secession would set a precedent that would rip the Confederacy apart(see "rope of sand" in his last Inaugural). Robert E. Lee explained this as well in the Acton-Lee Correspondence.
