They may as well already be dead. It doesn't really matter that they're still being made if nobody actually reads them

As a point of comparisan, look at Dr Who.
After Tom Baker left (the fourth guy in this lineup) The show declined dramatically. Nobody was watching it and it eventually got cancelled.
A lot happened in those declining years, there's alot of lore and stories that happened, but in terms of respected canon.. it's largely unknown and ignored in the reboot series that came after it, and by audiences.

One notable example is the series' main villain, the Daleks, these aliens in robot machines, for all of the series history they could not go up stairs due to the limitations of their robot vehicle. This was amended in a later episode by making them fly, but basically nobody watched it so the concept of daleks flying had to be completely re-introduced in the reboot.

Alot of the things happening in comics today fall on deaf ears, they will be forgeotten and discarded. They're effectively already dead
