The only way to save comics is to stop all the retcons and reboots and alternate universes and just have one coherent story that can be read from beginning to end. Comic continuity is too complex for the average reader.

Hot take- don't reboot everything from day 1, it will take years or decades at a monthly schedule to reach the iconic stories people want to get to. This is why something like the Ultimate Marvel books didn't replace the mainline books despite having similar intentions.
What they should do is release streamlined, numbered volumes covering periods of backstory that update them and make it more casual reader friendly. Get rid of tie-ins and get rid of stupid shit. Like the death of Jason Todd- you can ditch all the Joker becoming an ambassador stuff. Have one or two OGNs that cover Jason's time as Robin and death, part of a series that covers Batman's history from the beginning until about 5-10 real life years before the present day. From then on you can just move on to reading the last 5-10 years of tpbs if you want to keep up.

It is indeed pretty common to start a book in the middle of a series. A lot of book series before Harry Potter were made so casual readers can jump on at any point, and even still there's plenty like that for kids and adults where any book is meant to be one's first.

As a point of comparisan, look at Dr Who.
After Tom Baker left (the fourth guy in this lineup) The show declined dramatically. Nobody was watching it and it eventually got cancelled.
A lot happened in those declining years, there's alot of lore and stories that happened, but in terms of respected canon.. it's largely unknown and ignored in the reboot series that came after it, and by audiences.

One notable example is the series' main villain, the Daleks, these aliens in robot machines, for all of the series history they could not go up stairs due to the limitations of their robot vehicle. This was amended in a later episode by making them fly, but basically nobody watched it so the concept of daleks flying had to be completely re-introduced in the reboot.

Alot of the things happening in comics today fall on deaf ears, they will be forgeotten and discarded. They're effectively already dead

I can't stand the crossovers. I suppose I can understand for a franchise wide event (of which they do too many and the tie-ins are often pointless filler) but generally it makes reading a chore. The whole "Just pick a character and read the comic!!!" excuse is just naive at best and deceptive at worst. It works for a short but until you're hit with "STORY CONTINUED IN CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS #544!" which then hits you with "TO SEE PART 3 READ SLUTGIRL #1000!" and then for part 3 it finally loops back around to the actual character you wanted in the first place. Sure you CAN just ignore 2/3 of the story and go by context but you really shouldn't have to. There was a time when readers didn't have to. The other alternative is to wait for them to put out a collection. Yes I know there are indies but the average person thinks of Marvel/DC as the default and that's what we're talking about here. Indies don't have this problem

A comic book store relies on its big name titles to pay the rent, but while that rent is paid, they can afford to host a few shelves for niche lesser known comics.

Most comic shops run on a pull list, meaning you can straight up ask the shopowner "hey can you order [niche thing] for me?". Yes it does mean you having to know about it too which is why most shop owners pay attention to not only the comics mainstream but niche markets and think to order a couple for the New Release rack/wall to catch the eye and get some new customers for a niche series. When did this become such a problem? My generation was hardly the first wave of comic readers but we never had any trouble getting into the comics. We started reading all these books when they were in their hundreds and we didn't have any trouble. We didn't know all the history but anything important was at least clear through context. This was how we followed the stories. We just read them and let the story explain things as it happened and going back into the older issues to learn the history was its own kind of fun. But now people can't process anything. Everyone demands a guide or a chart before they even decide that they want to read something and then it's just binge rush to get done with it.

In the past, people read comics starting at random issues becuase there was no other way and no other form of entertainment. You either go buy a comic from the 20 or so at the magazine stand, or you kick a tree stump for fun. So people did this, they had no idea what they were reading, but it was better than kicking a tree stump.

Today we have both access to all comics avaliable and manga which is just better wholesale, so nobody bothers to read through the convoluted mess of comics and just reads manga instead.
