A cross is one of the most common pagan symbols and can denote everything from political authority to closely related 4 points of compass and authority over land.
"The Cross" is right up there with rectangle (or round) shaped buildings as one of the first things people make, for many reasons, like to hold stuff up off the ground. Even if you only need one leg, you will make a cross out of two sticks.

Notice how exactly about 1000AD we suddenly see common well detailed "Jesus on Cross" that even in this case has the name "Jesus Christ", not a generic "fish" meme without context, or a Chi Rho (just means "the anointed" and dates back to at least 200+BC).
BTW, "Christ" is a title or occupation, not a last name, means "street preacher" or wannabe cult leader/self styled "holy man".
