>where the skills were balanced so horribly there was an obviously correct choice every level-up you got. Great example is your first level-up, every single priest you have can dual wield pistols from the start, increasing their range is a no-brainer.
Naw. You don't need to touch the increased range skill. The skill that reduces cognition cost for weapons by 2 or generates 1 cognition if you start with 0 cognition are much better than a little range. Hell, the entire Lexmechanic branch is OP as fuck with the final skill netting you more cognition for getting hit and cool down skill that maxes your cognition. That isn't even mentioning that you can collect all cognition from a node, or get cognition from killing enemies so it incentivizes you to load up on powerful weapon to mass kill more enemies for cognition generation and faster clears. The only thing that will limit you is augment capacity, otherwise you'll load up on weapons that take up 3 or 4 cognition to use. Not only that, but Lexmechanic has some God tier arms with 2 HP and 20% dodge chance so 1/5 attacks just whiff.
