The reason why it was the most popular game on the console, is because it was the pack-in game at launch for the 'Super Set'. This was the most common pack-in bundle, followed by the Super Mario Super set that came with Super Mario World and Super Mario All-stars. The majority of Super Mario World copies sold were bundled with the SNES with the reminder of them being sold stand alone at retail. The boxed retail copies are pretty rare to come by. Also Donkey Kong Country was a popular alternative pack-in to Super Mario World from 1994 to about 1995.
