It can technically work with a proper delivery, you just have to not outright sell it as a lovecraftian horror game. In fact, labeling your game as such is like giving out the culprit in a detective title.
As I see it, player starts in a normal setting doing something of his own, and the further he gets into the game, the more things stop making sense, and start going wayward, until the big revelation at the end, something like that. Yes, this will require precise writing and well put scenario that most modern devs aren't capable of in the slightest, but it is possible.
