I think it's more important to give skyrim a pleasing, aesthetic than to try and make it look realistic. I mod my game to make it look like an anime, which makes me happy, even though it's clearly lacking in the graphical fidelity department.
The problem with trying to make your game realistic is that whenever you painstakingly adjust one scenario to look appropriately realistic, all other scenarios will wind up looking like shit because you overadjusted for one scenario. For instance, you spend so long trying to make nights look suitably dark and immersive, and thereby make days too dark. Or you spend so long trying to make rainy days look gray and washed out, and make sunny days also gray and washed out in the process.
