The only Souls game I genuinely enjoy more than SotFS is Bloodborne. SotFS is also the only Souls game where magic based builds are fun imho. Hex specifically was the best, assuming you ignore Faith pre-nerf.

Red Sands was fine as it was. People were just stupid and always trying to run into the sand route to escape from fights. You see it happen still in current Red Sands every once in a while too. The oasis definitely helps, but it's not going to make or break a fight. I've had tons of matches where I thought I was going to get stomped after all my teammates ignored the oasis and beelined to the middle only to completely dominate a fully buffed team.
If I had a choice I would bring back the old Red Sands, I hate how much space there is in the new version, you're constantly trying to chase someone down because they have half a dozen routes to choose from.
I really hope the new map has something unique, because speedlanes kind of fucking suck
