As with most things, the writing is really bad.
Gone is the carefully built world with deep asian influences that Avatar: The Legend of Aang was set in. Instead of well defined nations with clear inspirations like China, Japan the Inuit, you get a amorphous blob of a modern city inspired by NY that doesn't manage to evoke noir feelings despite being based around the 30s and 20s.
Gone is the carefully choreographed bending styles, all unique and formed from a real life martial art. Now you get an ugly MMA inspired style with no identity.
The characters are bad and charmless, the aesthetics are dull, the interesting spirituality is all gone and replaced by some fags basic bitch understanding of Yin and Yang.
