I think 3H's popularity among newfags speaks for itself as to how strong an entry point it is for new players. Engage is something I would come back to much later as your 5th or 6th game, you definitely want to play some of the 3DS and GBA era games before Engage at least.
The fact that the next game is a follow-up to Three Houses speaks for itself really. Engage is a weird aberration that's very hit-or-miss even for people who have played a lot of FE, so its unsurprising it was received so poorly among casual and newer fans.
