The trial is fiction. In reality Pilate was not a nice man sympathetic towards Jews. He was fired by Rome because he was a hard ass and the Jews kept rebelling against him because of it. There was no such thing as a holiday for letting Jewish criminals and insurgents go free just for the fuck of it. It’s a fairy tale.
The really interesting thing about the trial is Jesus and Barabbas. According to the gospel, Barabbas was a rebel leader who led an insurgency. And not just “an insurgency” but “THE insurgency” in which Romans were killed. Bar Abbas means “the son of the father”. So Jesus was a nice guy while “the son of the father” Barabbas was actually who was the bad guy. (Don’t get them confused, potential Roman converts!)
So it’s pretty clearly a late, phony story, the purpose of which was to separate a real Jesus Messiah-insurgent from the fictional innocent guy worthy of Roman worship they had misrepresented him as, and give you an explanation for this confusion which really wasn’t. Plus, you get to blame Jesus’ death on the Jewish mob, which indicates a later, gentile authorship.
