>People have been conditioned by what I call "Slick slop" and what I mean by that is studied cinema from the point of a committee that is making all the "right calls". It's in other words soulless but competent. They know what pitfalls to avoid, they know exactly what to do to ellicit a certain reaction in an audience, they know how to avoid the awkward humps. It's a consistent flatline, it has no life to it.
This is why shit like modern film and AAA video game music is boring as shit now. If you look at all the most memorable and iconic music, it tends to be a bit "weird", like it specifically sticks out in your mind. Take The Good The Bad The Ugly theme for example, it's such a odd piece of music with its whistling, chanting and harmonica. But that's what makes it fucking awesome.
Nowadays music like that would immediately be shot down by focus testing, even if 8 out of 10 people like it, 2 will say "ew" and that will just go for something for generic and forgettable instead.
