This is as old as MGS itself. Psycho Mantis was pretty divisive, plenty of people just wanted a serious military melodrama without anything supernatural or goofy. People talk about Raiden putting people off MGS2 but doubling down on the supernatural also played a part. By the time 3 came around, everybody had well moved onto Halo and GTA, so it was occupying more of its own niche.

For starters it has the worst stealth in the series. The boss fights are ridiculously easy (don't even get me started on the angels). There aren't very many ways to solve encounters and if you run low on ammo or stealth items, don't worry, Drebin gives you an infinite amount of whatever you need (don't even cope by saying this is social commentary on the war economy). Constantly rehashing story beats that already been covered in previous games. Kojima pantented(tm) movie length debriefings where he explains the most retarded part of his games, the overarching plot. Liquid Snake retcon being the most legendary asspull of all time to cover up his past writing. The entire game is a mess from top-to-bottom, but in spite of all of that, it still has one of the best final thirds of any of his games. That is it's only redeeming quality. The series totally regressed with its entry.

The summary of The Boss' character is ultimately that she's tired. She spells this shit out verbatim when talking with BB before their battle because Kojima doesn't understand subtlety. In spite of doing everything 'right', her life boiled down to her country abusing and taking shit away from her, her lover, her health, her child and after everything - her life.

This is why shit like modern film and AAA video game music is boring as shit now. If you look at all the most memorable and iconic music, it tends to be a bit "weird", like it specifically sticks out in your mind. Take The Good The Bad The Ugly theme for example, it's such a odd piece of music with its whistling, chanting and harmonica. But that's what makes it fucking awesome.

Something like a Kojima game has plenty of ups and downs, and flaws, no matter what game you pick it's going to be a bumpy ride. But this bumpy ride is ultimately way more interesting and rewarding than something that is more palatable but watered down.
