>Whats the secret to making a compelling and strong female main character that doesn’t immediately offend or cause gamers to throw raging tantrums?
I know this is just a coomer muscle woman thread but I'll answer.
First, make her attractive or extremely charismatic. The only female main character (or one of the main characters) that isn't conventionally attractive but very well received, is Kriea from Kotor 2. Because of her wisdom and voice acting. But if you just have a hot woman who isn't too annoying then that also works. 2B is very robotic in her emotions and doesn't really express herself at all during the story for a long long time. But everyone loves her anyways because of her ass.
Second, don't make her insufferable. I think a common trap that most bad female writers do is that they attempt to make their female characters masculine by making them absolute assholes who commit the most cruel acts to their enemies. Doesn't matter if the enemy is even close to deserving of whatever awful fate, making your female protag do it is very off-putting, and its even worse if she is ugly as sin See Ghost of Yotei for the most recent example.
You can only get away with this if it is the player made that female character and it's just an option to do. Like with any of the awful things you can do in BG3 or Fallout for example.
Third, remember that this is a character who happens to be a woman. Being a woman shouldn't be the center piece of her entire identity. Its just something she is, not a sign she wields or some sort of political statement. But a character in whatever predicament that the game takes place in. Alien Isolation would've worked as a man as the protagonist just as well as a female would have. And I dare say that I could say the same for Dead Space too. But that could be my own dogshit opinion.
