Ukraine pushing to join nato wasn’t the main issue here, it was just the final straw. Russia was already tired of Ukraine repeatedly violating their agreements and lying about it, they kept promising to enact federalization and then not doing it and, as we later learned, they were deliberately stalling so they could build up troops as a final push to end the civil war. Russia spent a whole year trying to negotiate with Ukraine and get them to stop massing troops on the border of Donbas but for some reason the entire world became collectively retarded and decided you can never have diplomatic relations with mean poopoo pants nations. Instead of trying to solve this problem without bloodshed, they decided the best course of action was to egg Russia on and then act shocked when Russia finally did something about it. Of course this was deliberate, no one gives a fuck about Ukrainians, least of all the west, the hope was they could bludgeon Russia with ukraines corpse and maybe slow down their alarmingly fast reconstruction, sort of a last ditch effort to maintain the global hegemony. It uh….didnt work and instead Russia is both stronger than they were in 2014 and have a military with tons of combat experience.

The same reason they didn’t have a problem with the Baltic states joining, the issue isn’t nato, it’s WHO joins nato. For one, Finland isn’t exactly in a threatening position, they have to cross a major chokepoint, they learned that lesson the hard way in 1942. Ukraine meanwhile has a straight shot to Moscow across empty fields. Also consider that Finns aren’t fucking insane, Russia rightfully deduced Finland wouldn’t try to edge article 5 and kick off WWIII. Ukrainians on the flip side have demonstrated they’re cool with sucide bombing. Do the math.
