Slow start (dry infodump) but starts getting better once you meet the pink little girl and more when you get to the snow island and then every patch gets a little better. You'll have trouble upgrading the characters though, since you need to finish the story to unlock the new areas (they are not that long though). And get verina from the standard selector, and possibly shorekeeper.
