Pretty sure they would defend her even if she doesn't want to. I'm more interested on how faithful her animations and portrayal are more than her gameplay gimmick.

Sadly true.
Everyone defaults to her backstory, but outside of it she's just as flat as anyone else.
Her whole thing minus story, was being serious and speaking vaguely. She compliments Mario's name once and the dynamic ends there.
You can even tell Nintendo had no idea where to go with her personality and ended up throwing it away in spinoff games.
Shame because Mario Golf: World Tour shows that she can at least have her cool (and rarely funny) portrayal without looking jarring.
