They've been at war for so long no one even knows how long the war has been going on for. You find out as you watch that the war is draining their economies, doesn't really leave much room to actually develop technology. At its heart the series is very much a nostagia for the old days. I mean they literally wage war using Napoleonic tactics in space. Which is silly in it of itself.
