How do I make this sort of commander work in this format?
Like I can see how this card would work really in a 20 life format where I can run multiple bolts, but I have no idea how to transition to a format where I have to chew through so much life

that's what I thought. I guess I don't mind the extra effort but isn't that like, really ambitious?? Wiki says there are 121 (!) different packs with 61 themes, and then the beginner box has another ten packs with themes of their own -- and basically none of these cards are standard legal? So they end up having fourth and fifth versions of characters like Zuko and Aang just so they can support all these packs?
I've glanced at some of the Jumpstart cards and it seems like they all use the same mechanics - Lessons and Shrines and Allies and Bending - as the ones in the Standard set which has 280 cards. Would it really not have been possible to make 61 decks using some combination of the cards in the set and some Standard-legal reprints? On the one hand I'm really impressed by the amount of dev work that went into all that, and I really like Jumpstart products in principle, but it's just so weird to me that buying Jumpstart cards doesn't let you... JUMPSTART a standard collection at all.
