For example, you want 4 Brainstorm because you can readily cast it and are almost always happy to see it (fugg bowmasters), but something like Stroke of Genius is clunky in multiples and becomes stronger as the game goes later, making it great at 2-of
Another tool that helps you think of number of cards is mana cost. A 4-cost spell is going to rot in your hand on turns 1, 2, and 3, so it becomes easier to run as a 3-of because you have 4 turns to naturally draw into it. Lower cost spells are also easier to double spell, so running more of them increases your chances of casting two spells in a turn, whereas 4+ mana cost spells are almost never going to be double spelled in a turn

There have been a lot of writings about land count and color requirements. You can search "Frank Karsten MTG Land" and you will find multiple articles. The big takeaways

You want to be able to play turn 1 Path to Exile then turn 2 Counterspell. You need 14 white sources for Path and 18 for Counterspell. An example mana base of 4 Tundra 4 Flooded Strand 6 Plains 10 Islands would hit your color requirements, since Tundra and Flooded Strand count towards both white and blue. If we improve this mana base by adding another land that produces W and U, we can then turn other lands into utility lands like Mutavault

One of the reasons people talk about archetypes is because it gives a roadmap for playing but also deck construction. While there are subgenres and combination archetypes, these are very well known

>control: 26 lands, 14+ interaction
An aggro deck which wants to come out swinging is going to prioritize threats over land advantage and interaction. Hitting their 1-2-3 drops that apply pressure is more important than making sure they get to their 4th land. Meanwhile control decks want to hit every land drop and use that mana advantage to create their win in a longer game, which is also why they want higher amounts of interaction.
These numbers are just a guideline, but also format dependent. Deck building ideas also come into play here. For example, decks running Gush are able to play far fewer lands for two reasons, namely Gush draws cards (find those fewer lands with additional draws), and Gush returns lands to hand (play lands returned via Gush).

Decks that are able to run functionally identical cards with different names gain a huge advantage in consistency. A great example of this is the 8-rack deck, which ran two different versions of a one cost card that deals damage when your opponent has little/no cards in hand. Having 8 copies means it is very likely to start with one of these or draw them naturally, and the deck also relied on the numerous discard options to turn on the 8-rack damage. Sometimes a card has a similar but worse card that goes with it, such as the deck Splinter Twin. Splinter Twin is a 4 cost enchantment with RR, but the deck can run a 5 mana creature (Kiki jiki) that costs RRR as a back up. Decks have the option to run 1-4 copies of Kiki jiki if they want further redundancy, but it isn't as appealing as the 8-rack situation for obvious reasons.

Look up "Moneyball Black", a build of it it just won the largest ever Premodern event. The idea is you play good, solid cards that don't fold to any match up and are well positioned against many top decks. The deck is rather cheap to build, worth your time to gitgud on, and you can adjust for any given meta. Black has really great and easy to use sideboard options too, so your brain won't be nuked when playing a tournament

In case anyone gives a shit, there were strangely TWO premodern games up (and a penny dreadful league) which is more than the one standard game. About 16 pauper games. 5 vintage. 7 legacy. 15 modern. 2 pioneer. 12 4 player commander, one 2 player commander, 5 duel commander.

If we had block formats maybe we could have allied and enemy shocklands for EOE and Lorwyn 2. It's actually so shitty that there are now enemy space shocklands but no allied ones and allied Lorwyn shocks but no enemy ones. Not to mention the Lorwyn shocks are easily the fugliest shocklands yet.

If you are playing a format that has a league it will probably be more fun. Leagues make it faster/easier to find a match, prizes are generous in constructed (+EV at 50% winrate), and you face more invested opponents so game quality goes up.

Free games are good if you can't win, either because you are bad at the game (<45% match winrate) or you are making hopeless brews. I think if you are in this category it's probably more fun to play casual/kitchen table formats, but you need to bring your own friends for that on mtgo.

I've glanced at some of the Jumpstart cards and it seems like they all use the same mechanics - Lessons and Shrines and Allies and Bending - as the ones in the Standard set which has 280 cards. Would it really not have been possible to make 61 decks using some combination of the cards in the set and some Standard-legal reprints? On the one hand I'm really impressed by the amount of dev work that went into all that, and I really like Jumpstart products in principle, but it's just so weird to me that buying Jumpstart cards doesn't let you... This is how i mainly play magic nowdays. We vote on a set, then we make 2 color decks of 40 cards each. No more than 3 rares, no more than 9 uncommons. You can have up to 3 copies of any one card. One and only one of your rares may be a mythic rare. All other rules apply.

It makes for some quick and dirty decks and allows us to play magic in a 4, 3, or 2 man bracket very quickly. Powerlevel is like sealed or a little better.

that's duskmourn, the haunted house set. the art is nezumi though who's from kamigawa, the tech shit is some cyberpunk implant or whatever. the whole deal with duskmourn is that it kidnaps shit from other planes like ravenloft in D&D
