What they were trying with 2042's map design was to have clustered, spaced out battles to split out players fighting in different sectors. Pre-rework Hourglass was the only map IMO that nailed this with people going for either the skyscrapers area or the stadium. The rest of the maps before the reworks didn't really nail that concept whether it be for better (Orbital, Renewal) or worse (Kaleidoscope, Breakaway, Discarded).
