I saw it more as an echo of the "white man's burden" but seen from a more ancient chinese angle. china is saddled with improving africa, and the movie shows what kind of endeavor that is, set in the ruins of the belgian colony. the beauty was in the contrast between the chinese and the belgians. the belgians came from a time of more romanticized imperialism, but the chinese were just there because of a gargantuan and mechanical scramble for expanding into any leftover territory. The black and the chink looked to me like a druggy couple that could not get rid of each other. It was beautiful and sad.
