It's actually really obvious. These designs were made under the assumption that there would only be growth, there wouldn't be so much saturation or uncertainty that a location would need to be closed, especially as they franchise out to local buyers and work with property managers. The solution is simpler boxy designs that can be cookie cutter and modular for whatever needs to move in and out and get replaced.
