The structure of modern society is a product of thousands of years of human development that is constantly in flux. It can only advance or degenerate. All of the institutions on earth are artificial (created by humans, not natural) and the larger they are the more resources and manpower they require just to maintain a state of basic existence. This ranges anywhere from small businesses to entire countries.
These institutions continue to grow until they've become to complex to maintain. At that point the institution either becomes so large that it can no longer support itself and it implodes or it finds new means to support itself more efficiently. Natural organisms achieve this gradually through evolution which enables things like plants and animals to grow larger and more complex. Human society evolves much faster than that, and throughout human history this has been achieved in the form of major scientific and technological breakthroughs.
>agriculture helped feed people and sustain larger populations
>writing helped organize those larger populations
>medicines helped keep those large populations alive
>industrialization increased the speed at which society could function
Right now the world is obviously heading toward automation through artificial intelligence. It will allow for widespread censorship and population monitoring for governments on a scale never before possible, reducing citizen unrest and allowing for government institutions to exist without threat of violent or peaceful revolutions. The quality of basic life may go down, but AI will introduce a new age of artificial comfort with an monitoring AI nanny state that lie to you constantly to keep you happy and content with your shit life working in the anthill of human civilization. That's out next evolution, ignoring our problems and inducing a technology fueled trance like state of artificial comfort.
