To me, a self-insert is not really about what an author/work is doing (although you could define it that way), but more about how a viewer relates to a character. Do they view them as an extensions of their own emotions and desires, wishing they would go through some of the same experiences themselves? And I don't necessarily have a problem with this. My issue is that the audience for a lot of popular manga have desires and wants in romance that I find extremely frustrating from a storytelling perspective, and because these desires seem to popular, they tend to get used a lot in romance manga.
