I was thinking about that not long ago, that Fallout 1 makes this very conscious decision to set the story 84 years after the bombs dropped, because that's like the second death of the old world. Of course the initial survivors would all still be people who lived in the old world and still have those mindsets and memories, but those people themselves are gone now
The only people remaining on earth who actually laid eyes on a world that had an America or a China in it are The Master and maybe Set, and they're sure as fuck too deranged to have any insight into it. Even the Brotherhood elder is in fact the grandson of the guy who founded the Brotherhood, watching with some concern as his tribe devolves from a paramilitary force to a feudal cult
The results of the Great War should be as deeply important to the people in Fallout as the results of the Thirty Years' War are to you. I'm not even saying you can't be educated enough to know why it happened or who was involved (although apocalypse people are not educated) but I am saying you should never in your heart feel that true vitriolic personal fervor OH NO NO HAPSBURGBROS HOW DO WE COPE THAT MANTUANCHADS ARE DABBING ON US. That shit's over.
